François Heinderyckx est professeur ordinaire à l'ULB où il enseigne la sociologie des médias et la communication politique. Il est Conseiller de la Rectrice pour l'alliance européenne d'universités CIVIS.

Il a été le Doyen de la Faculté de Lettres, Traduction et Communication (2015-2019).
Il est par ailleurs ancien directeur du Département des Sciences de l'information et de la communication, ancien président d'ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association) et ancien président de l'International Communication Association (ICA).
Ses recherches portent sur le journalisme, l'audience des médias et la communication politique.
